TORONTO - After six years of playing private investigator Jake Doyle on "Republic of Doyle," Allan Hawco has announced his next step: playing a fugitive in a new CBC series.

The Newfoundland-born actor has announced he will produce and star in "Caught," a drama based on Canadian author Lisa Moore's bestselling novel.

Hawco's production company Take the Shot Productions is teaming up with eOne to produce the series for CBC.

He will play David Slaney, a convicted drug-runner who escapes from a Nova Scotia prison after five years of incarceration.

Set in 1978, the series will follow his cross-country journey to reconnect with his former partner in crime and pull off one more job that would set them up for life.

Moore's novel was inspired by real events and was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2013.

Hawco, 37, said "Caught" represents an opportunity to continue his company's special relationship with CBC.

"We have no doubt that 'Caught' will be the first of many world class productions that we collaborate on together with eOne," Hawco said in a statement.

"It's exciting to be able to pursue projects that are meaningful and creatively interesting to our team while availing of eOne's considerable reach and resources internationally."

The sixth and final season of "Republic of Doyle" premieres Oct. 15 on CBC.
