The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack will close out the pre-Christmas portion of their Canada West women’s basketball season this weekend.  The WolfPack will visit the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves in Prince George. The teams will battle it out December2nd and 3rd.

The WolfPack enter the weekend with a 2-6 record while UNBC stands at 1-3.   TRU is coming off a victory over the UBCO Heat last Saturday (Nov 26) while the Timberwolves have lost their last two outings.

Still, head coach Scott Reeves says it will be another tough weekend.  “The preseason and the first half of conference play involved a lot of travel for us and has been a grind. We expect no different this weekend.”

Reeves believes the two clubs match up well: “They have some very talented players in key positions and it will take a team effort to slow down their offense.”

UNBC is led offensively by imports Vasiliki Louka (3rd year, post, Athens, Greece)  and Maria Mongomo (2nd year, forward, Las Palmas, Spain).   Mongomo is averaging 15.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while Louka has scored 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

TRu’s offense has been led by third year players Emma Piggin (guard, Kamloops, BC) and Michelle Bos (forward, Surrey, BC).  Piggin is averaging 12.6 points per game while Bos has had 9.3 points per game. Piggin has added 5.9 rebounds with Bos 5.6 boards per game.

The WolfPack got a spirited team effort in their last game and are hoping to continue that on against the Timberwolves.  “We didn’t hang our head last weekend after a loss on Friday and actually showed some character and grit to get the win on Saturday.”

Individually, the WolfPack have had a solid first half of the year from sophomore forward Chelsey Hoey (Parksville, BC).  She stands third in the Canada West in rebounds (9.4) and added six points per game coming off the bench.  “Chelsea has had a great first half and has been a very consistent performer.”

TRU has only one exhibition game during the holidays. That happens December 30th in Langley against the Trinity Western Spartans. They return to league play on January 6, 2017 in the first of four in a row at home on the Warner Rentals court at the Tournament Capital Centre. They have a two game set with the University of Victoria Vikes before entertaining the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.  Tip off on January 6th will be 6 pm.
