Thompson Rivers University has appointed DeDe DeRose as its new chancellor.

DeRose was B.C.’s first superintendent of Aboriginal Achievement, a principal in the Kamloops-Thompson School District 73, and an advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous languages, history, and culture in school curriculum.

The university announced her appointment in a press release on Feb. 23.

DeRose is replacing the former chancellor Nathan Mathew whose term has come to an end, and her official induction ceremony is taking place later this spring.

DeRose was born into a Secwépemc family in Williams Lake and is a member of the Esk’etemc First Nation. Her Secwépemc name is Tse7ekw te Spi7uw which translates to Sunrise Golden Eagle.

The university’s president and vice-chancellor Brett Fairbairn, “emphasized DeRose's embodiment of TRU's core values, particularly her dedication to Indigenous education and her efforts to promote intercultural understanding,” in the release.

DeRose won the Teacher Educator Award from the Association of BC Deans of Education, and has sat on boards and committees like the UBC President’s Advisory Board for Indigenous People and the Verna J. Kirkness Foundation.

“DeRose expressed honour and excitement at the opportunity to serve as chancellor. She emphasized the importance of TRU's role in the community and its commitment to sustainability, excellence, and the provision of a broad range of programs and opportunities for open learning.”
