Tropical depression off coast of southern Mexico expected to strengthen; hurricane watch out.

MIAMI - The government of Mexico has issued a hurricane watch for the southern coast of Mexico because a tropical depression is expected to strengthen by the end of the week.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, says the depression that formed Wednesday night is 515 miles (829 kilometres) south-southeast of Puerto Angel. It has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and is moving northwest at about 9 mph (15 kph).

It should become a tropical storm by Thursday. By Friday, it could be a hurricane as it nears the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

The hurricane watch is in effect for Barra De Tonala to Punta Maldonado.
