A trail at a popular outdoor recreation area in Kamloops has been temporarily closed after a cougar attacked a family dog over the weekend.

The incident occurred on a trail system at the south side of Isobel Lake on Friday, Jan. 5.

Jared Connatty with the BC Conservation Officer Service said the following day officers put warning signs up in the area and general information on how to react if you see a cougar in the wild.

“We can confirm there was an interaction with a dog,” Connatty said. “We don’t have significant concern for public safety and from what I can tell the animal left the area immediately and it was a chance encounter. We put the signage up out of extra precaution.”

He said cougar conflict calls to the conservation officer service for the Kamloops area have been below average for the past year.

Connatty said he anticipates removing those signs and letting things get back to normal within a week after things cool down in the area unless new information surfaces.

The owners of the dog were not injured in the ordeal and the pet escaped with minor injuries.

The owners requested they not to be identified by iNFOnews.ca.

Isobel Lake is located in the Isobel Lake Interpretive Forest about a 40-minute drive from downtown Kamloops in the Lac Du Bois Grasslands.
