Kamloops’s tourism promoter has announced its endorsement of the proposed multi-million dollar Kamloops Centre for the Arts.
In a news release issued today, Feb. 20, Tourism Kamloops CEO Beverly DeSantis announced the organization is encouraging a ‘yes’ vote during the April 4 referendum.
The decision on whether to go ahead with the centre for the arts will be put forward to voters with the question: “Are you in favour of the City of Kamloops borrowing up to $45 million to construct a Kamloops Centre for the Arts?”
Last time a performing arts centre when to referendum voters said no.
“The centre will allow our city to be a destination for those that travel for arts and culture, those that travel for business and conferences and those that are looking to add one more unique experience to their time in Kamloops,” DeSantis says in a release. “We don’t have this capacity right now and we have a significant demand for it.”
DeSantis says the city is currently turning away conferences, events and performances each year because there isn’t the appropriate space to host them.
“We also know that this investment will benefit our locals,” she says. “This project is a catalyst for our local economy and is a step towards significant revitalization for our downtown. This is a space that locals get to enjoy from graduations to sporting banquets and from concerts to business meetings.”
