To avoid overtime and shift changes, Vernon Water Reclamation Centre needs a new trailer

Vernon City Hall

VERNON - Vernon needs a new trailer to transport waste, and it won't come cheap.

An internal memorandum included in the Vernon City council's agenda this week requested approval to purchase a trailer for carrying biosolids. The proposed trailer is estimated to cost $65,000.

The memorandum detailed how the city currently hauls 10 to 12 loads of biosolids per week from the Vernon Water Reclamation Centre to the Regional Biosolids Composting Facility on Commonage Road. Until November of this year, a contracted local company provided one of their own trailers to haul the biosolids. The Reclamation Centre also owns a trailer to carry the load.

The local company recently went into receivership, making it unable to continue with its contract. The City awarded a new contract to a different company, but they only use the city-owned trailer.

The memorandum stated that it may be possible to continue with only one trailer, but it would be inefficient in the long run, resulting in overtime and shift changes. A new or used trailer will avoid disrupting the workflow.

The memorandum noted the $65,000 for the trailer could come from the Sewer Operating Reserves.

Council will hear this proposal at their next regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 10.
