Some Tim Hortons stores now accept payments by BlackBerry, iPhone, Android phone

TORONTO - A limited number of Tim Hortons stores are now letting you pay for a double-double with a smartphone.

Participating outlets in Canada and the United States will allow users with some BlackBerry 10 devices, iPhones and Google Android smartphones to pay with a TimmyMe app.

The BlackBerry app uses near field communication (NFC) technology and works similarly to the tap-to-pay method used with some debit and credit cards. Tim Hortons has not disclosed which stores are now offering BlackBerry payments.

The app for Apple devices running iOS 6.0 or later and Android devices running version 4.0 or later use barcode scanning technology. So far, there are 11 municipalities in Ontario's Niagara region that have stores setup for these payments.

For all platforms, the payments are deducted from a Tim Hortons account the user must set up and replenish as needed.
