Threat made on Snapchat against Vernon high school leads to charges

VERNON - Three youths are facing charges after making threats on social media.

Police say the threat was directed at Vernon Secondary School and was made by way of a video posted on a social media platform. In a release issued Friday, Nov. 10, RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says officers responded and arrested three youths.

“The three have been charged with uttering threats and mischief,” Moskaluk says. “The youths were released to their parents on conditions while awaiting their first court appearance.”

Police say they are confident this was an isolated situation and there is no further threat to the school.

“All the students, staff and parents of Vernon Secondary School have been made aware of the situation and the RCMP and School District 22 continue to work together on this issue to ensure the safety of the school,” Moskaluk says.

In a letter home to parents on Thursday, Nov. 9, school officials said the threat was taken seriously.

"Yesterday afternoon we received a call from concerned parents. Their child received a Snapchat message via social media from VSS students threatening our school. All threats to our school community are taken seriously and we initiated our Threat Assessment protocol and contacted the RCMP immediately," the letter states.
