Thieves steal dog's ashes from Kelowna woman's car

Cameron's dog, Penny passed away four months ago.

Someone broke Shelby Cameron's car window last week and they also broke her heart.

The Kelowna woman's car was broken into overnight last Thursday while parked at Osprey Park on Richter St. in Kelowna.

The thief or thieves stole Cameron's gym bag and some shoes but most importantly a box that contained her dog's ashes.

Cameron's dog — a boykin spaniel named Penny — died four months ago at the age of 17.

Cameron's plan was to spread Penny's ashes.

"Spreading her ashes a little bit at a time where me and her would go hiking," Cameron said.

But that plan has been dashed and Cameron believes the culprit(s) didn't know what they were dealing with.

"They probably didn't realize that they were ashes until later on," she said.

Cameron has been scouring local alleys, hoping to find the box containing Penny's ashes.

The cardboard box is labelled with the name Penny Cameron.

Cameron doesn't care about the gym bag or the shoes, she just wants her dog's ashes back — no questions asked.

"If I did that and realized they were ashes, I would probably try to return them anonymously. I don't want to shame people."

And despite the emotional setback, Cameron is not giving up hope.

"It would be a miracle if I did get her ashes back."
