KELOWNA - RCMP are looking for tips to help them find four large bronze plaques that were stolen from the Lakeview Memorial Gardens on Dry Valley Road in Kelowna.

The 2.5-foot by 3.5-foot plaques were bolted to stone walls and are worth several thousands of dollars, states an RCMP press release. Each contained about 60 names.

“This theft is very disheartening,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in the release. “Not only does this crime impact countless families and loved ones of those who were memorialized on the specialized plaques. We are told one of those plaques was a war memorial, which honoured the names of dozens of Canadian veterans.”

He called on the thieves to “do the proper thing and turn over the memorial plaques to your nearest police detachment, community policing office or return them.”

A vehicle would have been needed to transport the plaques.

The theft is believed to have happened between 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 and 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 18.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Const. Marshall Slarks of the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net.
