Thief takes stolen SUV on dangerous joy ride in Penticton

Penticton RCMP are on the hunt for a man who stole an SUV from an open garage on the weekend and took it on a dangerous joy ride.

Police were called at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, to a report of a white Ford Escape that was stolen from the 1000 block of Argyle Street, according to an RCMP news release.

By 11:45 a.m., the SUV was spotted near Main Street and Eckhardt Avenue being driven erratically. One witness said it almost hit her vehicle and a pedestrian.

Five minutes later it was speeding along Edmonton Avenue, where it drove onto someone's property and hit a parked vehicle before turning onto Government Street.

“This was a blatant disregard for the safety of motorists and pedestrians,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said in the news release.

“It's fortunate no one was injured. To prevent this kind of dangerous activity, we’re making every effort to identify the suspect."

The driver fled on foot after stopping the vehicle on the 1000 block of Government Street. Police attended the area, but couldn't find the suspect.

RCMP are asking for anyone who witnessed any part of this incident to call them at 250-492-4300.
