Board Chair, Vice-Chair Re-elected to Positions

Board Chair John Ranta and Vice-Chair Steven Rice were returned to their respective positions in a vote by the Board. This is John Ranta’s fourth consecutive term as Chair.

Money Put Aside for Monument to Wildfire Volunteers

The Board approved setting aside $100,000 in the 2018 budget to create a monument to recognize volunteers from throughout the regional district who gave of their time

during the summer’s devastating wildfire season.

The monument will be erected outside the Sandman Centre in Kamloops, where many of the wildfire evacuees were housed or received aid and support from volunteers.

It is estimated that more than 75,000 hours were volunteered to support and manage the response to the 2017 wildfire events

Reserve Funds for New Bookmobile

Thompson-Nicola Regional District Public Library Service Reserve Fund Expenditure Bylaw No. 2632, 2017, was granted third reading and adopted by the Board.

A draw of $500,000 from the TNRD’s Public Library Service Reserve Fund is required to fund the replacement of the existing Bookmobile, which is now at the end of its useful life and requires replacement.

Taxation Hike to Help Fire Department 

Loon Lake Fire Protection Financial Contribution Service Amendment Bylaw No. 2631, 2017, was adopted by the Board, after being granted a third reading at the Oct. 12
Board of Directors meeting.

The Amendment allows for a 25 per cent increase in the annual maximum taxation limit for the financial contribution service. Loon Lake Volunteer Fire Department
(MVFD) had requested the TNRD amend its bylaw, which is allowed once every five years under regulation. 

The amendment raises the maximum annual limit to $29,437, an increase of $6,777 over the 2017 requisition.

Gas Tax Money Approved for Clearwater

Septage Facilities, Paul Lake Park The expenditure of $30,000 from Federal Gas Tax Revenues - Community Works Fund component, allocated evenly between Electoral Area “A” (Wells Gray Country) and Electoral Area “O” (Lower North Thompson), was approved to fund upgrades to the Clearwater Septage Receiving Station.

The Board also approved a an amendment to a Federal Gas Tax funding agreement with the Paul Lake Community Association to allow for the installation of park benches and signage at the Paul Lake Community Park. The previous agreement allocated $45,000 in Federal Gas Tax –Community Works Fund funding to support the upgrade of playground equipment and the basketball court.
