MONTREAL - Vancouver's Filip Peliwo became the second Canadian to reach the second round of the Rogers Cup men's tennis tournament Tuesday with a comeback win over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

Peliwo was leading 3-6, 7-5, 3-1 when 32-year-old Nieminen retired with a hamstring injury.

Peliwo, 19, ranked No. 353 in the world, trailed 3-0 in the second set but rallied to tie the left-hander 5-5 after saving one match point.

He broke again to win the set.

Peliwo was up an early break in the third set when Nieminen couldn't continue.

Peliwo faces Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the second round.

The match was played on a sidecourt, but the small grandstand was packed with supporters chanting 'Let's go Filip,' during changeovers.

Peliwo joins Ottawa's Jesse Levine, a winner Monday over Xavier Malisse, in the second round.

Later on Tuesday, Frank Dancevic, of Niagara Falls, Ont., Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., and Milos Roanic of Thornhill, Ont., will play their first-round matches.

In other action, Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic upset 12th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 4-7 (4), 6-3.

Alex Bogolomov of Russia beat Michael Llodra of France 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 15th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland edged Frenchman Julien Benneteau 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles, Rafael Nadal and Pablo Andujar fought off two match points to beat fellow Spaniards David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (2), 6-4, 12-10.
