PENTICTON - Search and rescue volunteers spent the night searching for 10 lost hikers north of Oliver.

Shortly after midnight today, July 29, RCMP asked for help after three hikers exploring Gallagher Canyon north of Oliver were reported overdue.

Oliver/Osoyoos Search and Rescue responded with 15 members and found two vehicles at the lower end of Gallagher Canyon, according to a media release from the group.

As the night progressed, rescue crews were informed there were a total of 10 hikers, in two separate groups, missing.

Contact was made with one group at around 5 a.m. and five hikers were brought to the search and rescue base by 7 a.m. It wasn’t until 9 a.m. contact was made with the other five members of the group.

Air search support had been called in earlier, but the group wasn’t visually identified by air searchers until coordinates were established with rescuers.

The hikers were able to make their way out to the search and rescue base where they were provided with a first aid assessment prior to being brought back to Oliver.
