Skies will not be totally sunny in Kamloops and the Okanagan over the next few days but the heat will linger, growing as the August long weekend approaches.

Historically, the hottest days of the summer in the region are from mid to late July and this year looks to be back to a more normal pattern following last summer’s heat dome.

Both the Weather Network and AccuWeather forecast the temperature to hit 40 Celsius in Kamloops on July 28 and 41 C in Osoyoos. More northern parts of the Okanagan are forecast to be just under 40 C.

Before last year, the record high was 41.7 C in Kamloops, set on July 27, 1939 and July 16, 1941.

Kelowna’s previous record high was 41 C, set on Aug. 4, 1998. In Penticton the record was 40.6 C on July 17, 1941 and Vernon’s was 40 C on July 21, 1908.

Of course, those records were shattered on June 29 of last year when Kamloops reached 47.3 C, Kelowna got to 45.7 C and Lytton set an all-time Canadian record at 49.6 C.

Those records are unlikely to be broken this year.

But, before the region reaches its highest temperatures of the year, there’s a bit of cloud in the forecast in coming days.

The Environment Canada online forecast is for Kamloops to be mainly sunny today, July 21, and tomorrow with a 30% chance of showers on Saturday. Monday is also looking to be cloudy.

But high temperatures are expected to hit 33 C today and climb slowly over the next few days.

For the Okanagan, no rain is forecast but Saturday and Monday are expected to have more cloud. Highs in the Okanagan are expected to reach 33 C today and, as in Kamloops, climb to 36 C over the coming week.
