Temperature screening will start at Kelowna Airport next week

A Kelowna International Airport employee stands outside of the airport.

Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 23, all people intending to fly out of Kelowna International Airport will have to have their temperatures taken before going through security.

This puts the airport on the same footing as major airports in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal that already require the temperature checks.

“Temperature screening is an added layer of precaution to protect employees, passengers and the greater community, and to help prevent air travel from being a source for the spread of COVID-19,” Airport Director, Sam Samaddar said in a news release.

Temperatures will be taken either by a scanning camera two metres away or with a hand-held contactless thermometer.

Any passenger with a temperature at or above 38 C will be asked to wait in a specified area for 10 minutes then retested, unless they have a medical certificate saying the high temperature is not due to COVID-19. A negative COVID-19 test is not good enough.

Anyone failing the temperature test will not be able to fly and will be asked to rebook after 14 days.

Employees will also be tested.

The temperature tests, done by Canadian Air Transport Security Authority staff, are in addition to having to answer health questions and wearing face masks.
