Two 16-year-old boys are recovering after spending a cold and damp night in the backcountry near Nelson.

Just before 6 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 5, Nelson Rural RCMP received a report of two overdue snowboarders who were believed to have gone out of bounds and failed to return from the Whitewater Ski Resort, according to a RCMP media release.

A search of the ski hill was immediately carried out by the resort’s ski patrol and local search and rescue crews but the search was suspended overnight as conditions worsened.

A more in-depth search of the out of bounds area of the mountain was launched at first light with the support of an aircraft. Both snowboarders were spotted by search and rescue personnel aboard the helicopter.

Both teens were flown from the backcountry by helicopter to an alternate location where they were immediately assed by B.C. Emergency Health Services and released.

“The pair are very fortunate to escape without any injury or illness as a result of exposure to the elements,” RCMP Southeast District Media relations Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says. “We are told the pair had the wherewithal to construct a shelter and build a fire for warmth and more importantly stay put and wait for help.”

The two teenage snowboarders are back home with their families.
