KAMLOOPS - We are still months away from municipal elections in B.C. but that hasn't stopped some Kamloops city councillors from announcing their intentions.

General election date is set for Saturday, Oct. 20 and some on council have already confirmed they will be seeking re-election, while some are retiring or remain undecided.

So far, the councillors that have confirmed they will be running for re-election include Kathy Sinclair, Arjun Singh, Dieter Dudy and Donovan Cavers.

Coun. Pat Wallace has said she will be retiring from council after serving more than two decades, while Coun. Tina Lange has not announced if she will be running for council again this year.

Coun. Denis Walsh says he is still undecided about whether he will run again, but adds he will make a decision by June.

Council’s newest member, Ray Dhaliwal has announced publicly he is considering running for mayor after serving his first term on council. Mayor Ken Christian has not said if he will be seeking re-election in the fall.

Some of the newcomers looking to win a seat on Kamloops city council include Leslie Lax, Jennifer Dawn Adams, Bob Dieno and Sadie Hunter.

Candidates running for office in the upcoming municipal elections are looking at some changes to the playing field this time around.

The province has introduced a ban on union and corporate donations towards political campaigns and announced individual donations would be capped at $1,200. The legislation came in effect at the beginning of the month.

As well, candidate expense limits were announced earlier this year by Elections B.C. The expense limit for the candidates running for Kamloops mayor is $57,524.53 and $29,148.76 for those seeking a position on council.

In a report prepared for city council yesterday, May 8, the city’s administrative department provided information related to voting places, hours, and special voting opportunities for the Oct. 20 election. Voting places have been announced in 15 different locations across the city.
