Suspicious Kelowna garbage fire spread to business

FILE PHOTO

A garbage bin fire sparked shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1500 block of Pandosy Street spread into a nearby business and the police are now investigating.

Scott Clarke, Platoon Captain, Kelowna Fire Department, said the first arriving crews found the fire in an alley and quickly extinguished it.

"Unfortunately it had extended into the commercial structure. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire response," Clarke said in a press release.

"Crews gained entry to the business and quickly extinguished the interior fire as well."

There were no occupants in the business at the time of the incident, though there was minor damage to the structure and contents.

"The fire is suspicious in nature and will be investigated by RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department," he said.

Three engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck, a command unit, a safety unit, RCMP and Fortis including 16 fire personnel responded to this incident.
