Suspicious Kelowna apartment fire prompts evacuation

There was a suspicious apartment fire in Kelowna early this morning.

Kelowna Fire Department responded to alarms at an apartment building in the 1900 block of Pacific Court at around 3 a.m. today, Feb. 5, according to a fire department media release.

The first responder on the scene saw fire billowing from the third floor and the building was evacuated.

The first crew in the building found a fire in one of the unit’s kitchens. The occupants were able to put out most of the fire with fire extinguishers and crews confirmed the fire was out.

Everyone was able to get out of the building, but one resident was treated for smoke inhalation and taken by ambulance to hospital.

The fire is considered suspicious and the cause is under investigation.

Kelowna Fire Department responded with three engines, a rescue unit, a ladder truck and a command unit for a total of 16 fire personnel. RCMP and BCAS were on scene assisting as well.
