Suspicious chemicals found outside Lumby business

The Vernon RCMP is asking the public to avoid a street in Lumby after a large number of unknown chemicals were discovered in front of a business.

Police are treating the issue as a "suspicious occurrence."

Police received a call at 9 a.m. Monday, April 4 about the large haul of suspected chemicals left in front of a business in the 1800-block of Miller Street, Lumby, according to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release.

"After responding (to) the location, frontline officers cordoned off the area, and as a precaution, a nearby residence and several businesses have been evacuated," according to the release.

Police say the area will remain cordoned off until a hazardous materials team and the Ministry of Environment arrive and complete an assessment of the situation.

In the meantime, police are asking the public to avoid that area of Lumby.
