KAMLOOPS - Police are investigating after a Kamloops RCMP cruiser was hit by a suspected impaired driver early this morning.

The incident happened on Columbia Street at 6:10 a.m. today, Feb. 21, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says.

The officer was driving his police vehicle westbound on Columbia Street when he saw another westbound vehicle ahead of him, weaving and striking the snowbank on the median, Shelkie says.

The suspect vehicle turned left at 3 Avenue and proceeded to travel west on Columbia Street but in the wrong lane. The police officer continued westbound in the correct lane, Shelkie says.

He activated his emergency lights, turned his unmarked police vehicle around into the eastbound lane, and stopped in the far right lane in an attempt to stop the vehicle, Shelkie says.

The suspect vehicle then allegedly struck the police car head on at a low speed, and the driver was taken to a local medical facility for minor injuries. It's suspected the driver was impaired.

The police officer did not have any injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
