Suspect surrenders to Kelowna RCMP after 8 hour standoff

A Kelowna man is in custody and facing charges after RCMP officers arrested a suspect that was allegedly armed with a handgun inside of a home.

The RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist Kelowna RCMP yesterday, Jan. 18, at around 4:45 p.m., after it was reported that a man armed with a handgun was located inside of a home in the 700 block of Leathead Road, according to the RCMP in a press release.

Front line officers contained the area around the home and made efforts to call out the home's occupants. Multiple people left the house, however the suspect refused to emerge, according to the RCMP.

“After a prolonged effort to de-escalate the situation, the suspect surrendered peacefully to police at approximately 1 a.m. He was taken into custody without further incident,” says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy, media liaison with the Kelowna RCMP, in the press release.

A 51-year-old Kelowna man remains in custody and faces a number of potential charges. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or remain completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online here.
