Suspect shot and killed by Revelstoke RCMP officer

BC’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after an RCMP officer shot and killed a suspect in Revelstoke on Sunday.

Officers were called to a report of a stolen vehicle on Victoria Road East in Revelstoke at around 11:48 p.m., Aug. 27, according to an Independent Investigations Office of BC media release.

Roughly 45 minutes later, the vehicle’s owner told police they spotted it but the driver fled.

RCMP say the officers found it and while trying to pull it over “there was contact between the stolen vehicle and a police vehicle.”

The suspect fled on foot, and after a brief chase, RCMP say he entered the police vehicle.

“One officer discharged their firearm striking the man,” reads an RCMP media release. “Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to hospital. He was later pronounced deceased.”

The independent investigation office’s probe will focus on what happened leading up to and during the suspect’s interaction with police, and what role the officer’s actions or inaction may have played in their death.

The IIO is asking anyone with relevant information or video footage of the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in BC. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
