KELOWNA – A suspect used a pickup truck he stole in Penticton to hop a retaining wall and escape from police when they finally caught up with him in Kelowna last weekend.
Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says police received a tip around 1 p.m. Jan. 6 that a possibly stolen Ford F350 from Penticton was in a Kelowna parking lot on Powick Road.
It is unclear from a media release how long RCMP chased the suspect, but witness Dustin Mcalpine says he saw a Ford F350 being pursued by police at high speed down Highway 97 near Carrington Road in West Kelowna.
He says the front end of the truck was damaged and the suspect was driving “very aggressively.”
Cpl. O’Donaghey wouldn’t confirm there was any damage to the vehicle, but says the driver left the parking lot in Kelowna in a hurry sometime after 1 p.m.
“The pickup truck fled over a retaining wall into an adjacent parking lot when officers arrived in the area to investigate,” O’Donaghey says, adding the driver struck and damaged a parked tractor trailer in the process.
“Kelowna RCMP Air Services were engaged and a search for the suspect vehicle was conducted with negative results,” he says.
ICBC lists the F-series line of Ford trucks as the most commonly stolen line of vehicle in B.C.
