RCMP arrested 49-year-old man for trying to attack a security guard with a knife in downtown Kelowna.

On March 25, at around 10:00 p.m., Kelowna RCMP were called to a business in the 1500 block of Banks Road, according to an RCMP media release.

A man was reportedly waving a knife and trying to attack a security guard.

When officers arrived, the man was being pinned down by security.

Witnesses told the RCMP that the man became aggressive and tried to spit in the security guard’s face after being asked to leave the property.

Security tried to arrest the man when he pulled a knife and started threatening them with it.

A bystander intervened, stopped the man using the knife and helped control him until police arrived.

A 49-year-old West Kelowna man is facing charges of assault, uttering threats and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and held in custody.

He was released from custody Tuesday on conditions and is scheduled to be back in court on Thursday.

“This individual’s actions are concerning and police recommended he be held in custody to deter similar actions from occurring. Fortunately, the security guard and other bystander were not injured during this act of violence,” Cpl. Michael Gauthier, Media Relations at Kelowna RCMP said in a press release.

“Our office will continue to work with the BC Prosecution Service to ensure police did everything possible to maintain safety for our community.”
