KAMLOOPS - A local co-operative conducted a survey this holiday season to see how Kamloops felt about installing a year-round public market in Riverside Park and how people would want to use it.
The survey conducted by the Kamloops Public Market Co-operative yielded 827 responses, according to a media release.
The majority of those surveyed were in favour of the proposed public market in Riverside Park for at total of 375 giving the thumbs up. It also revealed that younger participants were more likely to be all in.
There were 268 not in favour of the Riverside Park location, and another 100 were totally against the project going forward. Those over the age 55 were more likely to share this sentiment.
There were 84 undecided participants.
Concerns voiced in the survey were mainly due to participants' uncertainty on the project’s potential impacts on parking, Heritage House and traffic in the area.
The co-op’s executive director, Daphane Nelson says the “most important information” to them is regarding how people would actually use the public market.
“I feel like we got a lot of really good information on how people would use it and who would use it,” Nelson says.
The majority of people say they would use it for local vendors and food.
In regards to concerns over the Riverside Park location, Nelson invites people to talk about it especially groups who use Heritage House.
“This project isn’t going to live or die on location,” Nelson says. “We actually want it to go ahead regardless of where it ends up.”
