Most of British Columbia’s residents are in favour of a ban on single-use plastics, according to a recent survey.

The poll conducted by Research Co. found the majority of those surveyed disagreed with a November 2023 Federal Court ruling that overturned the proposed federal ban, calling it “unreasonable and unconstitutional."

Seventy-one per cent of British Columbians support banning single-use plastic in Canada, including grocery bags, straws, plastic cutlery and food takeout containers and less than a quarter (24%) are opposed, according to a Research Co. media release issued today, Feb. 14.

Most residents are conscious about recycling and limiting their use of disposable plastic.

More than four-in-five residents (81%) said they bring their own reusable grocery shopping.

“About two-thirds of British Columbians aged 18-to-34 (65%) rely on re-usable bags at the grocery store,” Mario Canseco, president of Research Co, said in a press release. “The proportions are higher among their counterparts aged 35-to-54 (78%) and aged 55 and over (95%).”

Close to half of BC residents (48%) go out of their way to recycle, including holding on to bottles and cans until they can be placed into a proper recycling bin, all of the time.

More than one-in-five residents (21%) frequently limit hot water usage in their homes by taking shorter showers or running washing machines or dishwashers with full loads only.

However, fewer always unplug their electrical devices when they are not in use (15%), and even fewer choose organic food or buy biodegradable products (9%).

Opinion is also divided according to region.

Two-thirds of residents of Northern BC (66%) are in favour of the ban on single use plastics and even more people in the Fraser Valley (69%), Metro Vancouver (70%), Vancouver Island (71%) and Southern BC (72%) are in agreement.

More information about the poll can be found on Research Co.'s website here.
