Kamloops residents have yet to see an end to the cool, unsettled weather conditions being experienced in the city, but this weekend should bring a couple of days of improved conditions with some sun and seasonal temperatures.

July is continuing a wet, unsettled weather pattern that Kamloops residents have become all too familiar with during the past couple of months.

Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says Kamloops weather has been subject to an “Omega block” pattern since late May, and it appears as though it will continue into the first full week of July at least.

He says the trough-like pattern that has dominated weather in southern B.C. over the past few weeks takes its name from the shape of the letter of the Greek alphabet.

"That’s been causing us to have this cool, unsettled weather, and in general the omega block seems to be weakening, but overall we’re going to remain in a trough-like pattern into the first full week of July,” he says. “We can expect unsettled weather for the next little while. We’ll have breaks – this weekend looks fairly dry – but even so, I wouldn’t rule out a possible thundershower this weekend.”

Other parts of the country are experiencing more summer-like conditions, however.

The Weather Network reports heat warnings are in place for southern and eastern Ontario where daytime highs will hit or exceed 30 C, making it feel closer to the 40s, with no significant relief in sight to the heat.

In Kamloops today, expect a mix of sun and cloud with winds becoming west at 30 km/h gusting to 50 this afternoon.

Today’s high should reach 21 Celsius with a low of 11 and a 30 per cent chance of showers late this afternoon and evening.

There is a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight.

A weather alert continues for the South Thompson regarding possible heavy rain and increasing river flows in the region today.

A mix of sun and cloud is also in store for Friday, with a 30 per cent chance of late afternoon showers.

Friday’s high should reach 20 C with a low to 10 C. Winds are expected to be west at 20 km/h in the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday should be sunny with highs of 25 C and 27 C respectively.

Clear skies and a low of 11 C is anticipated overnight Saturday, along with a low of 13 C on Sunday night.

Monday should see increasing clouds with a high of 27 C. There’s a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight Monday with a low of 15 C.

Clouds and a 60 per cent chance of showers continue into Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs of 25 C and 24 C respectively.

Kamloops' normal high and low for early July is 27 C and 13 C.
