With Australia's bushfire struggles in their sights, the community at Sun Peaks chipped in to create the ultimate Canadian winter getaway package in an effort to raise more relief funds.

The package, valued at over $10,000, will be donated to Snow Aid Australia, an online auction for bushfire relief and wildlife rescue organized by SnowsBest.com, Australia’s leading online snow editorial platform.

“Sun Peaks is home to hundreds of Australian staff and residents. We also welcome thousands of Australian guests each year, so it came as no surprise that the community wanted to donate whatever they could to this cause,”  Arlene Schieven, president and chief executive officer for Tourism Sun Peaks said in a press release.

“The amount of support we received was overwhelming."

Colin Brost, director of market development for Tourism Sun Peaks said the ties to Australia made reaching beyond resort boundaries was an easy choice.

"With deep personal and professional connections to Australia, we knew we needed to think beyond just what Sun Peaks could offer, so reaching out to Air Canada and our partners in Vancouver made sense,” he said.

Items in the package include:

  • Seven nights' accommodation for two, courtesy of the Coast Sundance Lodge
  • Six-day alpine lift tickets for two, courtesy of Sun Peaks Resort LLP
  • Six-day performance rentals for two, courtesy of Jardines

In addition to the TSP lead package, Sun Peaks Grand and Sun Peaks Resort LLP partnered with Australian Tour Operator Travelplan Ski and donated a seven-night package of their own to the auction.

On Australia Day, community fundraising efforts raised over $14,000 through creative events that included a Sausage Sizzle, with Sun Peaks Resort and Sun Peaks Grand matching entry-by-donation funds raised at a special Aussie Day Party.

Sun Peaks Resort also set up a free, dedicated landline for Australians to use to check in on friends and family.

The Snow Aid Australia online auction goes live on Sunday, Feb. 9 and closes Friday, Feb. 21. For more information, visit: www.snowaidaustralia.com.
