Student makes social media threat against Kootenay school, RCMP get involved

A Kootenay student will not be returning to class for the remainder of the school year after threatening a local school.

A Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was notified that a youth allegedly made a threat on a social media platform towards a local school in the area, Thursday, June 9, according to a press release from the Trail RCMP.

The officer told the school's principal who was already actively managing the situation.

The student will not be returning to the school for the remainder of the year, according to the RCMP.

The student allegedly did not have any intention to follow up on the threat, nor had the means to carry it out at the time of the incident. The student is being supported at this time, according to the RCMP. Police officers continue to monitor the situation along with the school.

"Trail RCMP will fully investigate any direct threats made toward a school as several high profile school tragedies have occurred in the recent years. We take these incidents very seriously and the perpetrator may face criminal charges if they apply," said Trail RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich, in the press release.
