Strong month for residential permits

August was a good month for residential permits.

KAMLOOPS - It was a good month for single family construction in Kamloops with twice the number of permits issued this August over the same month in 2013.

With 22 single family dwelling permits issued at a value of $6.7 million, we saw a significant jump from the 11 permits valued at $3.9 million issued during August 2013. Five multi-family single units were also added this year for another $1.1 million in permit values, bringing the total residential permits to 49 for August and 278 for the first eight months of the year.

Year to date permit numbers remain lower this year than last year — 278 compared to 338 — but construction values are up almost $9 million to $66.6 million.

Commercial permits dropped this August but a strong start to the year means we are still ahead of last year for year to date construction values — $63.6 million compared to nearly $39 million last year.

Overall miscellaneous construction permits, such as accessory buildings, plumbing, retaining walls and swimming pools also saw a drop in August but remain more than $2.5 million ahead of last year for year to date tallies.

More than $136 million in construction value has been permitted this year, up from just under $100 million during January through August of last year.
