Storm the Ogopogo: Okanagan gets in on Area 51 action

KELOWNA - Storm Area 51, the Loch Ness and now Ogopogo?

You’ve probably heard of Storm Area 51, the Facebook campaign that’s lured millions into action — on the internet, anyway.

More than 2 million people have signed up to attend and an additional 1.4 million are "interested" in attending the Sept. 20 event in the Nevada desert, aimed at finding out if UFOs are real.

"We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and co-ordinate our entry. If we Naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Let's see them aliens,” the event organizer says.

This isn’t the only search for truth and/or mythical beings.

There’s also the mock plan to storm Nessie, in Scotland. It’s aimed at definitively proving the existence of its own elusive creature: the Loch Ness monster.

At least 21,000 people have RSVP'd to an event called "Storm Loch Ness, Nessie can't hide from us all."

Nessie truth-seekers will gather en masse Sept. 21 to, as the event description says, "find dat big boi."

And, because the Okanagan has its own mythological beast, it’s not surprising that a local has tripled down on the fun, offering an Ogopogo themed event, which admittedly is not getting nearly the same amount of traffic as the aliens or the Loch Ness, so far.

"Storm Lake Okanagan, The Ogopogo can’t hide from all of us " is another mock event scheduled for the same day as the Area 51 gathering.

“We gotta find this thing before the Scots find Nessie!” the event set up by Stephen Keppler says.

Departing from the mythical another similarly themed parody event was set up for today, Aug. 2, and it was all about the new speed cameras.

“Photo radar didn't last long back in the day, and these new speed cameras have got to go too!” according to the event set up by Big Ginger, from Power 104.

“Does anyone really want to save lives? Save money on gas? Keep your insurance prices down? Make the world a better place? No. Those are all silly things to fight for. That's why we should all plan to speed through the cameras at the exact same time.”
