OSOYOOS - A stolen car being pulled over rammed the police vehicle making the stop before fleeing the scene Friday night.

Osoyoos RCMP say an officer pulled over a 1994 Toyota Camry in Osoyoos just before midnight on Friday, April 3. As the member pulled in behind the car the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and rammed the police cruiser.

The suspect then fled north towards Oliver with police in pursuit. A spike belt was successfully used on Main Street in Oliver and the suspect took off on foot before being apprehended.

Derek Ledgard, 21, of Oliver, was arrested and held in custody over the weekend. He appeared in court Tuesday, April 7, and is charged with theft, using a weapon to strike an occupied police vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving and resisting arrest, and will also be facing charges of Breach of Probation.

He will appear in court again Wednesday, April 8.

The officer was not injured when his vehicle was rammed.
