Stolen Kamloops vehicle bursts into flames after hitting bear carcass

A stolen vehicle burst into flames after the culprits tried to escape and hit a bear carcass.

Kamloops RCMP were investigating a stolen car at around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, when the driver quickly sped away from them, heading straight towards a bear carcass on Highway 5, according to an RCMP media release.

The vehicle hit the carcass and sustained considerable damage, but the driver carried on regardless.

“Soon after, officers observed the vehicle engulfed in flames on the frontage road in Rayleigh, and confirmed it to be a Mazda stolen from a business on Aug. 19,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in the release.

A suspect was located nearby and arrested. They have since been released, pending further investigation.

Anyone with information related to the stolen vehicle or the fire are asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-31792.
