Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,032.58 up 127.14points):

Great Basin Gold Ltd. (TSX:GBG). Miner. Down two cents, or 8.16 per cent, at 22.5 cents on 8,292,045 shares. The stock dropped for a second day in a row. On Wednesday, the Vancouver-based miner said it is facing a "liquidity challenge" and is looking at strategic alternatives.

Viterra Inc. (TSX:VT). Grain handler. Up two cents, or 0.12 per cent, at $16.15 on 6,440,268 shares.

Uranium One Inc. (TSX:UUU). Miner. Up 12 cents, or 4.92 per cent, at $2.56 on 5,167,070 shares. The Toronto-based miner's stock has been steadily rising since posting solid second-quarter profits earlier in the week despite lower revenue.

Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:BNK). Oil and gas. Up seven cents, or 2.27 per cent, at $3.15 on 4,706,196 shares. The Calgary-based company reported improved profits and revenue in the second quarter on Monday.

DeeThree Exploration Ltd. (TSX:DTX). Oil and gas. Up 31 cents, or 6.57 per cent, at $5.03 on 4,691,772 shares. The stock closed at its highest since early 2011. Its revenues, which DeeThree reported Tuesday, nearly doubled which helped it return to profitability compared to a loss in the same year-ago period.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Up $1.34, or 3.91 per cent, at $35.60 on 3,764,953 shares. The world's biggest gold miner said it is in talks with China National Gold Group Corp., China's largest gold producer, over its African assets. The move is believed to shore up Barrick's balance sheet.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,221.25 up 14.62 points):

Solimar Energy Ltd. (TSXV:SXS). Oil and gas explorer/developer. Up a penny, or 28.57 per cent, at 4.5 cents on 6,121,375 shares.

Universal Wing Technologies Inc. (TSXV:UAV). Oil and gas explorer/developer. Up three cents, or 150 per cent, at five cents on 4,939,000 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Danier Leather Inc. (TSX:DL). Leather goods retailer. Down 50 cents, or 4.44 per cent, at $10.75 on 1,400 shares. The Toronto-based company had a wider loss in the fourth quarter and suffered a huge cut on its fiscal year's net income as revenues fell flat.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Gas. Up 28 cents, or 1.27 per cent, at $22.39 on 1,765,813 shares. An accident at one of Encana's natural gas wells in Colorado killed one worker and injured three others. The accident marked the first fatality at the company's operations.
