Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,424.70, up 13.76 points):

Progress Energy Resources Corp. (TSX:PRQ). Oil and gas. Up $8.50, or 73.59 per cent, at $20.05 on 40,977,721 shares. Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company is offering $5.5 billion in a friendly deal to buy Progress Energy Resources Corp., its Canadian partner in northeastern B.C. gas fields, with an eye to exporting natural gas off the West Coast.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up $1.33, or 6.73 per cent, at $21.08 on 8,087,310 shares.

Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Up 47 cents, or 4.30 per cent, at $11.41 on 5,275,660 shares.

Western Potash Corp. (TSX:WPX). Potash exploration. Down 25 cents, or 21.93 per cent, at 89 cents on 5,222,157 shares.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurance. Down seven cents, or 0.65 per cent, at $10.77 on 4,339,208 shares.

Gran Colombia Gold Corp. (TSX:GCM). Miner. Down two cents, or 6.45 per cent, at 29 cents on 4,304,030 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,164.42, down 7.01 points):

Mart Resources Inc. (TSXV:MMT). Oil and gas. Up 29 cents, or 27.62 per cent, at $1.34 on 8,585,952 shares.

Eacom Timber Corp. (TSXV:ETR). Forestry. Up 0.5 cents, or 5.56 per cent, at 9.5 cents on 8,404,400 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Research In Motion Limited (TSX:RIM). Consumer technology. Up two cents, or 0.21 per cent, at $9.46 on 1,653,784 shares. RIM said Thursday that it is cutting 5,000 jobs as it restructures it operations and that the launch of its much anticipated BlackBerry 10 smartphone will not happen until the beginning of next year. The company announced the cuts as it reported a loss of US$518 million or 99 cents per share for its latest quarter.

Shares of Centerra Gold Inc. (TSX:CG). Miner. Down $3.16, or 31.98 per cent, at $6.72 on 1,470,355 shares. Shares were down more than 30 per cent on Thursday after the company said Niyazbek Aldashev had resigned from the company's board of directors. A managing partner of international law firm Lorenz LLC in its Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, office, Aldashev was co-chair of Centerra's corporate social responsibility committee and a member of the audit committee and the human resources and compensation committee.
