Two emaciated female dogs and their puppies were rescued from a property in the Shuswap and taken into care by the BC SPCA.

The American bulldog, Labrador retriever mixes seized from the property in Chase each have a littler of nine puppies.

“The dogs received very little, if any food,” said Eileen Drever with SPCA in a media release issued today, Nov. 22. “It appears the owner left the dogs and puppies outside to fend for themselves with no visible food or water.”

The eighteen puppies were found huddled together in a completely inadequate, makeshift doghouse surrounded by hazards including sharp chicken wire, she said.

“The two moms had very low body scores, two out of nine. The dogs’ ribs, hips and spines were clearly visible. An animal protection officer observed the puppies trying to suckle, but the moms were so malnourished they did not have enough milk to feed this large number of puppies,” Drever said.

The dogs were taken to a vet clinic to be examined and get treatment, where the mother dogs were put on a re-feeding plan.

“They were so under weight we needed veterinary approval just to give them water,” Drever said.

The puppies were underweight and have been in and out of a vet clinic since they were taken into care. All of them had diarrhea and lethargy and one had a urinary tract infection which Drever said is rare, requiring antibiotics.

The SPCA did not say if any charges of animal cruelty will be laid.

The two moms are currently available for adoption but will need to find a forever home that will take both. The puppies will be available for adoption in approximately one week.
