BASEL — Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set wins at the Swiss Indoors on Thursday.
Auger-Aliassime, the 2022 and 2023 champion, fired 28 aces in a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) win over Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
The Montreal native won 96 per cent of points on his first serve and didn’t face a break point.
The victory extended Auger-Aliassime’s indoor winning streak to six matches after he captured the Brussels title last week. The fifth seed remains in the hunt for a spot at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
Meanwhile, Shapovalov posted a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over France’s Valentin Royer, striking 11 aces.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., product broke the Frenchman three times and won 76 per cent of first-serve points.
Shapovalov next faces Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, while Auger-Aliassime takes on unseeded Jaume Munar of Spain, who upset second-seeded American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.
With quarterfinal wins, Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov would meet in an all-Canadian semifinal.
