NEW YORK (AP) — Clarke Schmidt pitched seven hitless innings and the New York Yankees held the Baltimore Orioles to one hit in a 9-0 rout on Saturday.

JT Brubaker gave up a single to Gary Sánchez to open the eighth for the Orioles’ only hit.

Schmidt (4-3) was bidding to throw New York’s first no-hitter since Domingo Germán threw the Yankees’ major league-leading fourth perfect game on June 28, 2003. The Yankees had not thrown a no-hitter at home since David Cone’s perfect game on July 18, 1999, against the Montreal Expos.

Baltimore was nearly no-hit for the first time since Aug. 12, 2015, in Seattle by Hisashi Iwakuma.

Schmidt struck out five and issued both walks in the first inning when he threw 29 pitches. The right-hander threw first pitch strikes to 16 of 24 hitters and exited after tying his career high of 103 pitches.

Schmidt exited after throwing 21 pitches in the seventh. Brubaker allowed a two-strike single to Sánchez and some in the crowd of 46,142 lightly booed.

RAYS 8, TIGERS 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Junior Caminero, Danny Jansen and Christopher Morel each hit a solo homer, helping Ryan Pepiot and Tampa Bay beat Detroit.

Taylor Walls had two RBIs for Tampa Bay, and Yandy Díaz extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Pepiot (5-6) struck out seven while pitching five innings of one-run ball.

With its second straight win over AL Central-leading Detroit, Tampa Bay moved a season-best nine games over .500 at 43-34. The Rays are a major league-best 22-8 since May 20.

Jahmai Jones had an RBI double for Detroit, and Jake Rogers also drove in a run. Brant Hurter (2-3) recorded two outs as the opener and was charged with four unearned runs.

Caminero and Jansen connected in the fourth, giving Tampa Bay a 7-1 lead. Morel went deep in the seventh.

BREWERS 9, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Quintana pitched six innings of three-hit ball, and Milwaukee beat Minnesota.

Isaac Collins had two hits and three RBIs for Milwaukee in its third consecutive win. Brice Turang had two hits and scored two runs.

The Brewers improved to 6-2 in their last eight games and moved a season-high seven games over .500 at 42-35.

The Twins had four hits in their eighth loss in nine games. They lost 17-6 in the series opener on Friday.

The game was played under an excessive heat warning. The feels-like temperature reached 105 degrees with little breeze.

Quintana (5-2) struck out four and walked one. Grant Anderson pitched an inning before Aaron Ashby finished the shutout for the Brewers.

Twins right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (2-4) allowed four runs, three earned, and four hits in six innings.

BLUE JAYS 7, WHITE SOX 1

TORONTO (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette homered, helping José Berríos and Toronto beat the lowly Chicago White Sox.

Berríos surrendered an unearned run and two hits in a season-high 7 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked three in his first win since May 29.

The last-place White Sox finished with two hits in their ninth loss in 10 games. They dropped to 8-32 on the road this year.

Davis Schneider had two hits and three RBIs as Toronto bounced back nicely from Friday’s 7-1 loss in the series opener.

The crowd of 41,488 rose for a standing ovation when Berríos (3-3) exited after walking Ryan Noda. The lengthy start was a welcome one for a Toronto bullpen that used six relievers to cover seven innings Friday.

Ahead 1-0 on Bichette’s game-opening homer, Toronto used five singles to add three more runs in the second inning. George Springer scored on a throwing error by right fielder Austin Slater, and Nathan Lukes and Schneider each had run-scoring hits.

MARINERS 10, CUBS 7

CHICAGO (AP) — Ian Happ homered twice and drove in four runs, and the Chicago Cubs held off Cal Raleigh and Seattle for a victory.

Raleigh opened the ninth inning with his major league-leading 30th homer after he also went deep twice on Friday. Luke Raley hit a two-out single for Seattle, but Daniel Palencia closed it out when he retired Donovan Solano on a foul popup.

Michael Busch, Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong also homered for Chicago on a 94-degree day at Wrigley Field with a 20-mph wind blowing toward center field. Brad Keller (3-0) got five outs for the win for the NL Central leaders.

Solano and Raley each had three hits and two RBIs for Seattle, which won 9-4 in the series opener on Friday.

CARDINALS 6, REDS 5, 11 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yohel Pozo had a two-out RBI single in the 11th inning to give St. Louis a comeback victory over Cincinnati.

The Cardinals overcame a 5-2 deficit, tying it in the ninth on Nolan Arenado’s leadoff homer off Emilio Pagán. Alec Burleson had a two-run homer and an RBI single for St. Louis.

Phil Maton (1-2), the Cardinals’ sixth pitcher, threw one inning for the victory. Rookie Chase Petty (0-3), the eighth Reds pitcher, gave up the deciding hit to Pozo.

Reds star Elly De La Cruz, who overcame getting sick on the field in the fourth inning, hit a changeup 435 feet to center in the seventh for his team-leading 17th homer and a 5-2 lead.

With two outs in the fourth, the game was halted after De La Cruz — who also had a triple — vomited. After the trainer came out, De La Cruz remained in the game. Two ground crew members cleaned up the spot at shortstop.

Matt McClain had three hits for the Reds.

GIANTS 3, RED SOX 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers hit his first home run for San Francisco against his former team, and the Giants beat Boston just six days after the big trade between the teams.

Devers was acquired from Boston on Sunday. He delivered his first long ball for the Giants in the third inning on Saturday after he went hitless in his first six at-bats in the series.

Devers sent an opposite-field drive off Brayan Bello (3-2) over the left-field fence for a two-run shot that happened to be caught by a fan in a Red Sox T-shirt. Devers got loud cheers from the big crowd in San Francisco as he rounded the bases for his 216th career home run that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead.

Devers was traded by Boston less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension that he signed in 2023.

Heliot Ramos also homered for the Giants, who won for just the second time in their last seven games.

RANGERS 3, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Corey Seager singled in the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning and rookie Kumar Rocker won his second straight start and Texas beat Pittsburgh.

Seager’s sharp single to center field scored Josh Smith and put the Rangers ahead 2-1. Marcus Semien followed with a sacrifice fly.

Rocker (3-4) gave up two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings after pitching five scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox in his previous start last Sunday. The Rangers have won the first two games of the series and will try to finish the sweep on Sunday.

Mitch Keller (1-10) took his 10th consecutive loss, allowing three runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He was lifted after Semien’s sacrifice fly.

Keller hasn’t won since beating Miami on March 28 in his first start of the season.

The Pirates lost for the sixth time in seven games.

BRAVES 7, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. had two hits, walked twice and drove in a run as Atlanta beat Miami.

Drake Baldwin homered while Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI double and singled for the Braves, who have won seven of nine after falling to a season-low 10 games under .500 on June 10.

Braves starter Grant Holmes (4-6) overcame control problems and pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits while walking five and striking out five. Enyel De Los Santos, Dylan Lee and Rafael Montero completed the shutout.

Acuña, the 2023 NL MVP, has reached safely in 25 of 26 games since being reinstated from the injured list on May 23.

Atlanta struck quickly against Miami starter Eury Pérez (0-2) with Ozuna’s run-scoring double in the first. Acuña drew a leadoff walk then raced home from first when Ozuna hit a line drive to the right-field corner.

Acuña’s RBI double and Austin Riley’s run-scoring single in the fifth made it 3-0. Baldwin broke it open with a three-run drive off Marlins reliever Josh Simpson in the ninth.

PADRES 5, ROYALS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a three-run homer to end his long power drought and Dylan Cease pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning as San Diego beat Kansas City.

Luis Arraez gave San Diego a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the third, and the Padres won for the third time in 10 games.

The loss halted Kansas City’s four-game winning streak.

With the Padres ahead by one in the seventh, Jose Iglesias and Bryce Johnson hit consecutive singles. Tatis followed by smashing a 96 mph sinker from reliever Taylor Clarke into the left-field bleachers for his 14th homer this season and first since May 27.

Cease (3-6) effectively mixed his four-seam fastball and slider to keep the Royals from mounting much offense. He gave up one run and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings.

Adrian Morejon retired all five batters he faced to seal it for San Diego.

Royals starter Noah Cameron (2-3) permitted two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Jake Cronenworth had an RBI groundout for the Padres in the second. John Rave tied it 1-all with a run-scoring double in the third.

METS 11, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo each hit two home runs, and New York connected for seven solo shots to snap a seven-game losing streak with a win over Philadelphia.

Francisco Lindor, Jared Young and Francisco Alvarez also went deep for the Mets, who tied Philadelphia atop the NL East at 46-31. Lindor drove in three runs, and Soto finished with four hits and four RBIs.

Alec Bohm had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies, who lost for just the second time in 10 games.

Griffin Canning (7-3) pitched into the sixth inning, and relievers Huascar Brazobán, Ryne Stanek and Chris Devenski combined to blank Philadelphia over the final three frames.

The Mets went ahead in the third when Lindor led off with the first of three consecutive homers off Mick Abel (2-1). After the switch-hitter broke an 0-for-20 skid with a drive to center field, Nimmo clubbed a curveball into the seats in right before Soto made it 4-3 with the first of his two shots. New York last homered in three straight at-bats on Oct. 4, 2022.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) — Eugenio Suárez and Geraldo Perdomo homered, Ketel Marte went 4 for 4 and Arizona beat Colorado in hot conditions for their third straight victory.

The Rockies said the first-pitch temperature of 98 degrees was highest for a major league game this season.

A night after homering twice to reach 300 in his career in a 14-8 victory, Suárez hit his 25th homer of the season — a solo shot in the third for a 3-2 lead — to tie Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani for the National League lead and push his major league-leading RBI total to 67.

The slugger has homered in three straight games. He had a sacrifice fly to open the scoring in the first.

ANGELS 9, ASTROS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — José Soriano pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Logan O’Hoppe hit a pair of two-run shots to end a long home run drought and help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros 9-1 on Saturday night.

Soriano (5-5) struck out 10 and allowed one run on three hits and three walks. He has allowed just two runs in his last three starts covering 20 2/3 innings with 28 strikeouts. He hasn’t allowed a home run since April 22 — a span of 11 starts.

O’Hoppe hit his 15th homer and first since May 22 in the third inning to give the Angels a 6-0 lead. The catcher capped the scoring with his second of the game in the seventh.

Walter allowed seven runs on nine hits in six innings in his fourth career start.

GUARDIANS 4, ATHLETICS 2

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Luis Ortiz struck out 10 in six scoreless innings of two-hit ball and José Ramírez capped a four-run second with his 900th RBI as Cleveland beat the Athletics.

Bo Naylor and Johnathan Rodríguez had back-to-back RBI doubles off Athletics starter Mitch Spence (2-2). Steven Kwan and Ramírez added run-scoring singles for a 4-0 lead.

Ortiz (4-8) walked two and matched his season high for strikeouts. He allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs in his two previous starts covering 10 2/3 innings.

Emmanuel Clase pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 17th save in 20 opportunities.

NATIONALS 7, DODGERS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nathaniel Lowe hit two of Washington’s five home runs and the Nationals beat Los Angeles.

James Wood, CJ Abrams and Luis García Jr. also went deep for the Nationals, who won a road game for the first time this month. They are 2-12 in their past 14 games overall.

Jake Irvin (6-3) worked around two homers and six hits in 5 1/3 innings to win for the first time in four starts. He struck out seven.

Three relievers held the Dodgers to one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings. Keibert Ruiz went 3 for 3 with a sacrifice fly for Washington.

Andy Pages, Will Smith and Teoscar Hernández homered for the Dodgers, who dropped to 9-4 since June 8. Dustin May (4-5) gave up three home runs in six innings.
