KAMLOOPS - After a brief drop in air quality risk factors, the levels are up again and Environment Canada continues a special air quality statement for the South Thompson region.

Several significant fires continue to burn, most notably in the central and northern Interior, Environment Canada says.

These fires have resulted in forest fire smoke spreading over large parts of the central interior and further east towards the Alberta border.

There are also large forest fires burning in Washington State that is spreading smoke in most areas just north of the U.S. border. It is to be noted that subtle changes in the winds and wildfire behavior could cause smoke to return or increase.

The Air Quality Health Index sits at a four in the Kamloops area, this is also designated as “moderate risk.” It may affect at-risk populations such as those with breathing sensitivities, but the general population can continue outdoor activities unless symptoms should appear.

Symptoms may include a sore throat or coughing.
