Spate of fraudulent income tax calls prompts warning from Salmon Arm RCMP

RCMP are once again warning the public about fraudulent Canadian Revenue Agency phone calls.

The automated calls attempt to get you to continue the call in order to avoid prosecution, according to a Salmon Arm RCMP media release today, July 10.

The Salmon Arm detachment has been receiving a number of complaints recently about the scam.

"Please do not continue the call. Just hang up on the call," Staff Sgt. Scott West says in the release, pointing out the Canada Revenue Agency does not do business with Canadians this way.

The scam artist may be spoofing a local number which would appear on call display and West says the CRA does not have an office in Salmon Arm, so would not be calling from a local number.

"Please do not provide any financial or personal information to whomever is on the other end of this call," West says. "Additionally do not confirm information."

To report fraud, go to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre website here.
