OLIVER - An Oliver man is facing several firearms charges after firing a rifle in his apartment.

Daniel Khafizov, 30, was arrested after police received a complaint from a resident in the building in a rural area south of Oliver near Road 11 yesterday, Jan. 7, around 2 p.m., according to an RCMP media release.

The neighbour was sitting on his couch in the unit directly above the suspect and heard a loud bang, police say. He then noticed the cushion beside him had a hole in it with stuffing coming out. He believed the loud bang came from Khafizov’s unit located directly below.

Police were able to arrest Khafizov without incident.

A search of Khafizov's apartment revealed spent .22 calibre casings and a .22 calibre rifle, along with multiple small calibre bullet holes in his ceiling and walls, RCMP say.

Several other units in the complex had multiple small calibre holes in the floors and ceilings.

Sgt. Blaine Gervais of the Oliver RCMP detachment said in the release police have no reason to believe Khafizov was targeting anyone, rather he was just carelessly firing the rifle indiscriminately into his ceiling and walls.
