The Sorrento Elementary School has closed its doors until Monday after COVID-19 exposures led at least two classrooms to self-isolate.

An Interior Health letter to families of students says the administration decided to close the school, beginning, Oct. 12, due to staffing shortages.

Two classrooms were already self-isolating until Tuesday, according to an earlier update from School District 83.

Sorrento Elementary had potential COVID-19 exposures on six school days from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6, according to Interior Health.

There is currently no outbreak at Sorrento Elementary, but all students and staff are instructed to monitor for symptoms while contact tracing work continues, Interior Health said.

Students are to begin an online learning program this week until in-person classes resume on Oct. 18.

There are currently 43 schools throughout the Thompson-Okanagan listed on an Interior Health web page as having COVID-19 exposures in the last two weeks.
