WEST KELOWNA - Design of a new soccer dome and field will move ahead immediately after West Kelowna council agreed to early approval of the project.
Chief administrative officer Jim Zaffino told council the early approval of the $3.78-million multi-purpose dome was necessary so design work can begin and the project kept on schedule.
The soccer dome has proven controversial with some West Kelowna taxpayers who think the money better spent on the half dozen projects that were cancelled to make way for it.
But Coun. Rick de Jong brushed aside those concerns.
“I’d like to point out we’re not just getting a dome, we’re getting a new playing field that is artificial turf,” de Jong said. “There will be lights inside so we can play at night, so it’s not just a dome, it’s a sports field.”
Coun. Carol Zanon said she was concerned about advancing the money before it was collected from taxpayers but Zaffino said no money would be advanced before an agreement is reached with the Westside Youth Soccer Association.
The association helped spur on the project with a $666,000 donation.
Council gave unanimous approval to the request.
