KRAKOW, Poland - The Italian football federation has sent a letter to UEFA seeking sanctions after the country's national anthem was again whistled at during the European Championship.

Loud whistles emanated from Croatian fans during the anthem before Thursday's 1-1 draw. Spain fans also whistled — albeit in lesser numbers — ahead of the opening Group C match with Italy, also a 1-1 draw.

Italian delegation head Demetrio Albertini wrote to UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino saying that he knows anthems are often whistled, "but that doesn't mean certain behaviour should not be publicly condemned, considering the sport values that UEFA has always upheld."

Italy next faces Ireland.
