Drivers on Interior highways should take extra caution today.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass and from the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass. The warning also applies to the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt.

Total amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres are expected, Environment Canada says, thanks to a Pacific frontal system rapidly approaching the southwest coast of the province.

Snowfall will begin this morning, Jan. 23, and become heavy at times this evening and through tonight. The Coquihalla Summit could receive 25 to 35 centimetres of accumulation, while Allison Pass and Kootenay Pass could receive 20 to 25 centimetres of accumulation.

By Thursday morning, snowfall should ease as the system moves through to the east, Environment Canada says.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult in some areas. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, leading to hazardous driving conditions.

Check with DriveBC before you head out on the highway.
