Significant amounts of snow are expected on highways in the B.C. Interior this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a special weather alert for the Coquihalla Highway, the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 3. The West Kootenays, Elk Valley, North Columbia and West Columbia are also expected to get hit with the same volume of snow.

The specific region of the Coquihalla is between Hope and Merritt, and on Highway 1, the weather statement applies to the stretch from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass.

Between tonight, Jan. 29 and the morning of Jan. 31, 15 to 30 centimetres is expected to fall on those regions as a result of a frontal system, according to Environment Canada.

The first amounts of snow are expected tonight in the Columbias and at the Coquihalla Summit. It will intensify in those areas and while spreading into the Kootenays on Sunday morning. The snow will start in Elk Valley on Sunday afternoon, and the storm will taper off by Monday morning.

Environment Canada reminds drivers how suddenly weather can change in the mountains, which can result in hazardous driving. Check Drive B.C. for the latest road conditions.
