A stolen snowblower has been returned to its owner after the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received a useful tip from social media.

During the weekend of Oct. 24, the snowblower was stolen from a Vernon property. After discovering the item was missing, the owner first notified police of the theft, and then posted information about the crime to social media, according to the RCMP in a news release.

Not long after, a person who saw what they believed to be the stolen snowblower for sale in a neighbouring community, contacted the owner. The owner relayed the information to police who, with the assistance of a neighbouring detachment, located it.

The investigator used a serial number to confirm the stolen item.

Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said in the release that serial numbers can greatly assist in identifying and returning lost or stolen property.

On Oct. 28, the item was returned to the owner, according to the RCMP.

No charges have been laid and the incident remains under investigation.
